A BAGPIPER dad played in the New Year with his family to mark a regular tradition in the town.

Robert Adam, 57, from Halstead, was a part of a pipe band which played in the town as revellers entered 2022.

Robert has played at the top of the town on previous New Year's Eve events, which were well received.

He played with the Colchester Pipers and was joined by daughter Lily.

Robert said: “It was amazing – hundreds of people came along.

“We played some classic songs like Amazing Grace. Everyone sung along and cheered us.

“At the turn of the year we played Auld Lang Syne and people really enjoyed themselves – it was definitely the best year yet.”

Robert has been playing the bagpipes for almost 40 years after being introduced to them by his father.

He said: “My dad first introduced me into it as he was Scottish, from Glasgow.

“He took me along to the Highland gathering in London, where there was a mass pipes and drums band of about 400 players – I loved the sound.

“I thought I’d give it a go at 18, and the following year I actually performed in that band.”

Robert’s family is musical, with both daughters playing instruments.

He said: "I have two daughters. I taught my eldest Casey, who is 15, to play the pipes.

“She got to quite a good level but at about ten years old, progressed on to the piano.

“My other daughter, Lily, who’s 11, came into the pipe band with us, and she often plays with me and my band.”

On top of the New Year’s performance, Robert also collected some money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association charity.

He said: “My partner was diagnosed with MND about five and a half years ago now, so I have become quite close to the disease.

“I managed to raise around £300 on the day and have also set up a page to hopefully collect some more.”
