A MAN who killed a victim after punching him has been jailed for 12 years.

Radu Ciobanu, 24, from, Witham, was sentenced after the death of James Avis in Hainault Avenue, Westcliff at 10.35pm on Saturday, September 25.

Ciobanu appeared at Basildon Crown Court this morning where he was jailed after admitting manslaughter on Monday.

They had spent the afternoon and evening drinking with a group of other people.

During the afternoon, 24-year-old Ciobanu and James, who was 35, got into an argument and Ciobanu headbutted him.

Investigating offices were told they then resolved their differences but got into another argument later on in the evening at which point Ciobanu suggested they settle the matter through a fight.

They then left the address and Cobanu, of Kings Chase, punched James causing him to fall to the floor, hitting his head.

James was taken to hospital and Ciobanu was initially arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent.

Sadly, James later died and Ciobanu was further arrested on suspicion of murder and later charged with manslaughter.

Halstead Gazette:

Senior investigating officer Det Chief Insp Louise Metcalfe, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “James Avis’ death was a needless and preventable tragedy.

“Radu Ciobanu did not intend to kill James but, ultimately, his actions had fatal consequences.

“This case highlights how violence of any kind can end in tragedy. You don’t have to go out with the intent to cause someone’s death for an altercation to end up in heartbreak.

“The family of the victim is left having lost a loved one, and the person responsible goes to prison and has to live with what they have done for the rest of their life.

“It is simply not worth it.

“I hope this result will help James’ family move forwards.”
