BRAINTREE MP James Cleverly has offered his condolences following the death of a fellow MP after a stabbing incident today.

Police remain on the scene following an incident in Leigh which reportedly saw Sir David Amess stabbed multiple times.

The Conservative Southend West MP was holding a surgery meeting at the Belfairs Methodist Church.

The veteran MP died at the scene.

According to reports, a man ran into the church before the MP was stabbed "several times".

The attack has prompted an outpouring of grief from the political world.

Braintree and Halstead MP James Cleverly offered his condolences to the fellow Essex MP's family

In a tweet, Mr Cleverly said: "I was hoping beyond hope that David Amess would pull through this. It was not to be.

"A truly lovely man. My thoughts and love go to his family at this most terrible time."

Witham MP Priti Patel also paid tribute.

She said: "I am devastated that we have lost Sir David Amess. David was not only a fellow Essex MP, but a kind and loyal friend.

“David served the people of Southend with endless passion, energy and integrity. That he was killed while going about his constituency duties is heartbreaking beyond words.

"It represents a senseless attack on democracy itself.

“Questions are rightly being asked about the safety of our country's elected representatives and I will provide updates in due course.

“My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with David's family and friends.”

Braintree Counci leader Graham Butland added: "So saddened by the news of the death of Sir David Amess MP. My prayers go out to his family."

Previously the MP for Basildon, Sir David held his Southend West seat since 1997.
