Brave fundraisers proved they were too hot to handle after taking on a challenge to promote mental health.

A total of 32 daring fundraisers took part in Mid and North East Essex Mind’s inaugural firewalk, which sees them walk over red hot embers to mark World Mental Health Day.

The e, held at Colchester United’s JobServe Community Stadium, proved to be a success as more than £7,000 was raised to support mental health services.

Julie Arthur, who braved the red hot challenge, said: “I didn’t believe I could actually do it until I did.

“What a fantastic feeling to achieve something amazing. I would encourage everyone to take a moment to think about their mental health and the mental health of others.

“Anything is possible - even walking on fire.”

World Mental Health Day itself is an internationally-recognised initiative where charities and support providers come together to raise awareness of the services available.

Their vital work helps to tackle the taboo surrounding discussions about mental wellbeing.

Stephanie Mills, marketing and fundraising manager for Mid and North East Essex Mind, said: “We are thrilled with the success of our first firewalk.

“Our sincere thanks go to everyone who took on this challenge and to everyone who sponsored them.

“We were delighted to see so many people come along and support our brave participants. Thanks also go to our event sponsor, DNA Architecture.”

Mid and North East Essex Mind provides counselling, peer support and practical support for children, young people and adults across the area.

Amid concerns this year one in four people will experience a mental health problem, the charity wants to ensure no-one has to face this alone.
