Brand new table tennis tables have been installed next to Watford Central Library as part of improvements to the town centre.

Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor posted a picture of the new tables - which were installed by the borough council - on Facebook on Wednesday, sparking a positive reaction from residents in the town.

Under current lockdown rules, outdoor sports facilities are allowed to open whilst people can also take part in formally organised outdoor sports.

People wanting to enjoy a game at the new table tennis tables in the town will have to bring their own bats and balls for now, although Mr Taylor said they will become available near the library soon.

He wrote in a Facebook post: “We have installed new table tennis tables near Watford Central Library as part of our ongoing improvements to the town centre.

“More changes are planned to this area to make it a more pleasant area for people to enjoy.”

Recently the council said it was receiving £85,636 of the government's Welcome Back Fund and Mr Taylor said the money will fund outdoor entertainment, outdoor table tennis tables and more planters.

He said earlier this month: “This funding will support a range of measures we already have planned including a fantastic summer of entertainment, free outdoor table tennis tables, even more planters to make the High Street colourful and lively as well as Covid-19 safety measures so people can feel confident about their visit. Our message for this summer is ‘Welcome back Watford’.”
