A MOTHER and son duo are taking on a marathon to raise money for the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

Michelle Baker and five-year-old son Eli, from Beazley End, are both keen runners and will take on the RNIB’s Marathon Mates challenge next month.

The challenge is inspired by those who have lost their sight but continue to run with a guide runner.

Michelle, 31 and Eli, who is partially sighted, will pair up and split the marathon distance between them over the course of the month.

Eli suffers from nystagmus, a condition where the eyes move uncontrollably, and ocular albinism.

Michelle said: “Eli and I really enjoy running together and think RNIB Marathon Mates is a great opportunity to do something we love while also raising money for the RNIB.

“We plan to split the distance between us and do 13.1 miles each.

“I also want to let other parents of visually impaired children know about the support the RNIB offers and how it can help.”

Eli hasn’t let his sight hold him back and Michelle helps him by telling him what’s coming up on their route and letting him know about uneven ground.

Lizzi Wagner, senior fundraising manager at the RNIB, said: “We’re delighted to have Michelle and Eli on Team RNIB for Marathon Mates.

“The last year has been particularly challenging for blind and partially sighted people.

“The funds raised from Marathon Mates will help the RNIB continue to provide support and advice to people living with sight loss in the UK.

“No one should have to face their sight loss journey alone.

“Please dig deep and support Michelle and Eli.”
