ROAD bosses say improvements to a small bridge remain on course to finish in the new year.

Essex Highways is in the process of replacing Cust Hall Bridge in Toppesfield after an investigation found the old structure had weakened.

The bridge has been closed to vehicles since September to allow contractors to remove the old bridge and begin work on installing a new one.

In its latest update, Essex Highways says work is progressing despite the national lockdown and the road leading up to the bridge has been extended and resurfaced.

Work is set to begin on creating a small dam to divert water away from the site, which will then mean the old bridge can be demolished.

The carriageway over the bridge will be widened to six metres and will serve traffic heading in both directions.

A temporary crossing has been installed for pedestrians while the works are taking place and a diversion route has also been set up for motorists.

It is hoped the new bridge will be built and ready to reopen again in January, but Essex Highways says bad weather may lead to delays.
