A PRIMARY school in Basingstoke has created an art installation to celebrate Remembrance Day.

Rucstall Primary School in Black Dam created the display of poppy wreaths after most of the usual displays to remember fallen heroes were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The wreaths have been placed on the boundary of the school and residents in the community were said to be delighted by the display.

Ruth Griffiths, headteacher at Rucstall, said: "At Rucstall Primary School, we are incredibly proud of how the community has come together this year to support one another.

"It is extremely important that we continue to educate children about our history and remember those who made sacrifices for us all.

"We hope that this art installation acts as a reminder."

On Remembrance Sunday, the Mayor led a scaled back ceremony at the town's War Memorial, with the usual parade called off because of the pandemic.

People wanting to pay their respects on Sunday were asked to avoid the usual 11am minute silence and go throughout the day.
