THREE Highworth councillors quit the Conservative Party and will stay as independents.

Differences of opinion that could apparently not be overcome prompted Coun Nick Gardiner, Coun Julie Murphy and Coun Gerry Evans to leave the group.

In an open letter shared online, the councillors wrote: “Back in May 2019, we were gratefully elected or re-elected to serve as your town councillors.

“When we stood, we were all members of the Conservative Party. Over a period of time, it became apparent that the views of the other Conservative members conflicted with ours.

“It was with a heavy heart that we stepped back from the group and more recently left the party. Our number one priority is to keep the best interests of Highworth at the forefront of everything we do.”

Now, nine of the 15 Highworth town councillors are independents.

One concerned citizen asked why this change of political affiliation has not led to resignations and triggered a by-election for the seats the three councillors hold.

Coun Gardiner replied that the councillors were elected as individuals rather than because of their political party and that the average cost of around £7,000 to host each by-election would be better invested in the town in other ways.

Several people agreed with this as they felt that Highworth’s best interests were being prioritised over party politics.

The open letter continued: “Looking ahead, we’re determined to continue supporting the people of Highworth to the best of our abilities.

“While we are technically now independent councillors, you may view us still as conservatively minded as we continue to support our MP Justin Tomlinson.

“If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to any one of us as we’d be happy to talk with you.

“Our contact details can be found in the Link and on the Highworth Town Council website.”

Coun Ken Saunders offered his full support to the trio.

He said: “I know this has been a difficult choice for you all to make. You have tried extremely hard to resolve the issues that have led to this announcement.

“You all have demonstrated that the interests of Highworth come first and I am sure you will continue to put the town at the forefront of your decisions.

“We haven’t always agreed on matters, but all of you have my support in the uncertain times ahead.”
