NEW proposals for another 130 homes on the outskirts of Halstead have been revealed.

Developers Orchestra want to build the homes on farmland off Mount Hill, opposite the Oak Road junction.

The firm has put in an application for outline planning permission to Braintree Council.

The site – between Halstead Hall and Blamsters care homes – is agricultural land but not currently in use.

The developers say 30 per cent of the homes will be affordable housing.

Hundreds of new homes on the southern outskirts of the town have already been given planning permission, despite concerns over the extra pressure they will put on existing services.

The latest application is next to another site opposite the Ramsey Road junction on Mount Hill with permission for 71 houses

That application was originally rejected by planners but the decision was overturned on appeal.

Halstead councillor Jackie Pell fought the 71-homes development and has concerns over even more homes being built off the busy A131.

She said: “We fought that one quite hard a few years ago.

“I am totally opposed to any developments there. It’s a dangerous road.”

The new site is also just outside the town boundary so new residents won’t pay council tax to Halstead Town Council.

Mrs Pell said: “They are going to be using all of Halstead’s facilities but they won’t be paying for them.

“Their money will go to Greenstead Green and Halstead Rural Parish Council so Halstead people will be subsidising them.

“I know we need to build more homes but there is a limit to what the town’s infrastructure can handle.

“They will use our schools and our doctors but won’t have to pay.”

She added: “I’m also really concerned about the highways issue. It flooded on the A131 outside Blamsters Farm and it could be dangerous.

“People need to look at the application and actually see how it will affect them.

“Just saying ‘I don’t like it’ doesn’t mean anything in planning.

“If you are not happy with it, write to the planning office or nothing will happen.”

The developers say they carried out a two-week public consultation before making the planning application and received just one objection.

The site is opposite the recently built Oakwood Hill development and would have an access road on to the A131.

Braintree Council will rule on the plans.
