A RESIDENT has hit out at Oxford Brookes University for ‘failing to control’ students ignoring coronavirus guidelines.

Students have reportedly been partying in groups of between 10 and 20 for the last four nights in South Park.

The resident, who did not wish to be named, said that there were ‘at least 10 parties dotted round the park’.

She added: “Given the noise, and aggression of some of the shouting and screaming I didn’t feel very safe going over but there was clearly large numbers of people.

“Given the speed at which the virus is spreading, I think the time has passed for discussion and monitoring and action needs to be taken.”

The gatherings, which went on until after 2.30am, have been held near the Cheney Lane gate of South Park.

A spokesperson for Oxford Brookes said: “The university is working closely with the police and council, who are conducting dedicated patrols within the city to ensure compliance with the new ‘Rule of Six’ law, including in South Park.

“We are communicating with students to reinforce our behaviour expectations and to make it clear that we will be taking firm action against those individuals who are identified as Oxford Brookes students who fail to comply.

“Both the university and Thames Valley Police would encourage residents to contact the police by reporting online or dialling 101 if they believe that individuals are contravening coronavirus laws in parks and other public spaces outside of our campuses.”
