SOUTHEND United will face Colchester United in League Two next season following the U’s play-off defeat at Exeter City tonight.
The U’s took a 1-0 lead into the semi-final second leg at St James Park.
But the Grecians triumphed 3-1 to make it through to the Wembley final where they will face either Northampton Town or Cheltenham Town.
Colchester included ex Shrimpers Frank Nouble and Luke Prosser in their starting line-up along with goalkeeper Dean Gerken who grew up in Rayleigh.
On loan Blues striker Theo Robinson entered the action as a second half substitute but was unable to help John McGreal’s side triumph.
As a result, Southend and Colchester will now be in the same League for the first time since the 2015/16 season.
