SOUTHEND United's academy Ricky Duncan wants Ted Smith to stay involved with the Shrimpers.

Smith has opted to end his playing career at the age of 24.

But Duncan feels Smith has what it takes to be a good coach.

"It would be great if we could keep Ted involved and get him coaching in the academy because he's always been great with the youngsters," said Duncan.

"Whether or not he would be interested in that I don't know but I'll definitely be talking to him about it.

"It's a shame he's decided to stop playing but it's a brave decision and one he's made for his own health.

"But I've known Ted a long time and he has a lot of experience which I think would make him a really good coach."
