STEVE Parmenter has set his sights on achieving a unique footballing double.

The former Canvey Island star lined up in the Football League while with Bristol Rovers.

And the Shoebury based Parmenter is now determined to reach at least that level in his new role as an assistant referee.

“I want to be able to say I’ve played and officiated in the Football League,” Parmenter told the Non League Paper.

“That’s the aim and it’s been going well.”

Parmenter officiated in the National League and the under 23 Premier League 2 division this season having successfully worked his way through the ranks.

The former Southend United kitman originally started as a referee before he opted to specialise as a linesman. This season Parmenter has been observed at every game and given a mark out of 100 which is then translated into a league table.

And Parmenter has been pleased with the progress he is making.

“I’m doing well in the Premier League 2 list and I’m about halfway in the National League so, putting it both together, I think I’m doing ok considering it is my first season at this level,” said Parmenter.

“I’ve really enjoyed the games I’ve had. It’s a different level compared to National South. You’re mic’d up, there’s an observer watching you at every game and if people knew what went in to the preparation they wouldn’t believe it. I’ve got a coach who gives feedback and everything is broken down.

“The referees in the National League are outstanding too. They’re the fittest they’ve ever been and everything is geared up for these referees to be professional.”

Parmenter is a Met Police officer by day and that also helps him deal with the pressures of running the line.

“With the stresses and pressure of the day job, football is a walk in the park,” said Parmenter.

“When I get 500 Yeovil fans calling me names it just makes me laugh. It’s not a kid with a knife, it’s not serious, it’s a game of football and I still love it.”
