A SINGER performed a heartfelt rendition of We’ll Meet Again for the soundtrack of a short film urging people to stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

Brighton artist Sophie Madeleine’s ukulele version of Dame Vera Lynn’s wartime classic is set to haunting images of empty British landmarks including Brighton seafront.

The online video backed by Dame Vera urges people to “stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives”.

Singer Sophie hopes the video will inspire “love and togetherness” as millions put their lives on hold.

“I’ve always thought of it as a beautiful and timeless song full of emotion, hope and optimism,” she said.

“It is more than 70 years since Dame Vera recorded We’ll Meet Again and although the context has changed, the words still resonate just as they did when she first sang it.

“Ultimately, it’s about love and togetherness and that’s something we all need to focus on when the country is going through a very difficult time.

“I hope this film introduces a new generation to the sentiments expressed in this beautiful song.”

Forces’ Sweetheart Dame Vera, who lives in Ditchling and is now 103, said the country’s response to the pandemic reminded her of the unity among Brits during the Second World War.

“It’s important to recognise the sacrifices millions are making by putting their lives on hold,” she said.

“But we also need to remind people that things will improve if we continue to pull together and that we will all meet again when this is over.

“We faced a very different enemy in the Second World War but the actions we are all taking today reminds me of the unity that was forged from adversity during the war.”

The video was created by creative agency Zinc Network. It is available to view on its Facebook page.
