PLANS are being put in place to help secure the future of some of Halstead’s most historic landmarks.

Halstead Town Council has been sent a report by the Council for British Archaeology highlighting the potential threat to 15 historic air raid shelters in the town.

The area adjacent to the air raid shelters is an official Conservation Area, however a review will now take place to see if the shelters can be included.

This would help protect the shelters during any future redevelopment, something Halstead 21st Century Group has campaigned to see.

A spokesman for the group said: “Halstead has a lot of built and natural heritage, but the town is under huge development pressure, and it has never had a Conservation Area appraisal, so we’re delighted with the town council’s decision to nominate it for one.

“We have made previous requests ourselves but were told that resources for Conservation Area appraisals were not available.”

Halstead Town Council will consult with campaigners going forward.

Braintree Council will carry out the appraisal.
