THE future of smart motorways may still be in doubt but work on the M62 is still continuing as normal for now with an extended closure this weekend to watch out for.
It was announced earlier this month that no new smart motorways will be opened until a Government safety review is completed after claims they were a 'death trap'.
A 10-mile stretch between Croft Interchange and Eccles (junctions 10 to 12) had been due to open in March this year after two years of smart motorway work disrupting journeys.
While it's still not clear what will now happen to that section of road, if you have spotted a matrix sign during your commute along the M62 and now can't remember the dates we have this guide for you.
Confirmed overnight M62 closures this week:
Monday, February 24 Westbound closed 10pm to 6am
Tuesday, February 25 Westbound closed 10pm to 6am
Wednesday, February 26 Westbound closed 10pm to 6am
Thursday, February 27 Westbound closed 10pm to 6am
Friday, February 28 Westbound closed 10pm to 6am
Saturday, February 29 Closed in both directions until 10am at the latest
Sunday, March 1 Closed in both directions 10pm to 6am
All the roadworks generally take place between 10pm and 6am and there will be diversions in place along the M56 and M60.
However this weekend will see a longer closure while a new 'superspan gantry' is installed over the motorway that will hold some of the new electronic signs.
The motorway will reopen by 10am on Sunday, March 1 at the latest.
