AN Essex orienteering society is hosting an event in Halstead next week.

The Winter Street Orienteering Event is being put on by the Essex Stragglers Orienteering Society on January 15.

It is an opportunity to get out and get some good exercise while also having fun.

The event is designed to test people's fitness and map-reading skills.

Competitors in the event have to find their way from point to point, with multiple checkpoints along the course.

There are two courses – a short 3.4km route with eight checkpoints or a 5.4km course with 12 checkpoints.

The event has been organised by Lucy Walker.

Dad Martin said: "My daughter has arranged this event as part of her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

"It's a mid-week winter competition run by Essex Stragglers Orienteering club but it's open to the general public.

"Competitors are tasked to follow a map route and find and record the four-digit number on fire hydrants.

"The winners will be the runners who return in the fastest time.

"This is suitable for experienced orienteers and absolute beginners as guidance will be given."

Competitors will be running along paths and streets at night.

High-visibility clothing and a torch is recommended and, while under-16s are welcome, they must be accompanied by an adult.

Maps are £3 and the event begins at 6.30pm.

Competitors must finish by 8.30pm.
