HUNDREDS of revellers braved the chilly weather for the big switch-on of Halstead's Christmas lights.

The Public Gardens were packed for Saturday afternoon's event, which saw youngsters from the town's primary schools take to the bandstand to perform festive favourites including The 12 Days of Christmas in front of proud parents.

Mayor Andy Munday led the countdown before flicking the switch with Holy Trinity School pupil Jack Williams, aged six, and Father Christmas, who had arrived in a spectacular sleigh.

Jack's mum Lauren, from Halstead, said: "It was lovely – it's been amazing.

"Jack has made lots of good memories today."

Jack Fincham, four, grabbed the chance to sit with Santa in his sleigh for photos.

Mum Nicola said: "He has loved it. I thought it was brilliant and the lights were amazing."

There were cheers as the stunning ribbons of lights came on in the award-winning park's trees and a snow machine sent real flakes into the crowd.

Mr Munday said: "It was a fantastic day. I think the chamber of commerce has done a great job of organising the Christmas fair.

"Halstead Town Council has done a superb job with the Christmas lights switch-on.

"The chamber of commerce and town council have worked well together this year and will do so in future to make it better and better.

"I really appreciate the support of everyone who attended the event and wish everyone a very merry Christmas and new year, and will be thrilled to see them again next year."
