A CHRISTMAS tree festival kicked off the festive season in Halstead with a record number of entries.

Almost 50 trees were on display at St Andrew's Church over the weekend.

The festival attracted entries from community groups, schools and businesses.

St Andrew's League of Friends chairman Roger Smith said: "We've got 47 trees which is ten more than last year.

"We are encouraging businesses and organisations to get involved.

"The emphasis is on community involvement and we've got Scouts, Guides, most of the local schools, Halstead Road Runners – everyone we can.

"There is no charge to enter trees or to get in on the door - we rely on donations.

"It's been very well received and we've had some very favourable comments.

"We give visitors voting slips and they vote for their favourites and the winner will be announced this week.

"So far we've had more than 500 people and we expect near to 750."

Mr Smith added: "The church is 700 years old next year and we are hoping to have a party to celebrate.

"There was a church here in the reign of King John but we reckon this church was started in 1320 and more bits were added on later."

Oswicks Property was one of the firms entering a tree at the festival.

Director Phil Woolston and sons Francis, aged six, and Elliott, four, were among the crowds admiring the displays and also visited the town's Christmas fair on Saturday.

Mr Woolston said: "It's been really good – I must say I'm impressed.

"The whole town from Head Street down to the has Bull has got involved.

"There is a nice community atmosphere."
