MARK Bentley admits Canvey Island need to build confidence when they visit Tilbury tonight.

The Gulls will make the short trip to Chadfields for their final Isthmian League Cup group stage clash.

And Bentley is eager for his side to bounce back having suffered a convincing 3-0 Isthmian North defeat to Histon at the weekend.

“My head is saying I need to get the players back on the pitch and build some confidence again,” said the Canvey boss.

“We have a massive game on Saturday against Heybridge Swifts and we have a really tough run of games coming up.

“We have got to be right and there are lads who need minutes.

“I have to look after a few of the players as well.”

The Gulls are unable to progress to the knockout stages of the Isthmian League Cup after registering just one victory - against Witham Town in the new-look competition.

But Bentley will demand a much-improved display after being left frustrated with the heavy loss to Histon three days ago.

“The performance against Histon was not acceptable,” added Bentley.

“I’m not accepting that from one of my teams and how I want to play.

“We went from being the best team on Tuesday against Witham and playing some great football to a lacklustre display.

“I wasn’t expecting it and I can’t accept that.

“We’re not keeping enough clean sheets.

“We have to stop balls coming forward but it’s the same goals we’re conceding.”
