A GAME of Thrones-esque battle of epic proportions is set to break out tomorrow at Hedingham Castle.

The ancient fortress will play host to a monumental clash when the sword and shield-wielding fighters of the Knights of Hedingham engage in furious combat as they try to defend the honour of their beloved Lord Robert de Vere.

The armour-clad bravehearts will go toe-to-toe with a rival army on both foot and horseback in a variety of chivalrous events.

In a test of will, resilience and ability, a series of single challenges will weed out the weakest and a Grand Melee will pit the two teams of warriors against each other as they try to capture the opposition’s flag. The 900-year-old castle’s intimidating main arena will then host an eight-person battle which will see each gladiator try to snatch the coveted title of the Knight of Hedingham from their nemesis’s iron grasp.

Fittingly the castle, which boasts a Norman keep and 160 acres of exquisitely landscaped gardens and picturesque woodland, is still home to the descendants of original owners the de Veres – giving the battling knights a real sense of duty.

A spokesman for Hedingham Castle said: “Knights of Hedingham is a brand new and exciting event with furious combat by knights on foot and horseback as the competitors battle for a place in the guard of Hedingham Castle.

“It will also feature exciting single combats where the individual knights test one another’s mettle, and metal, in contests as ferocious as they are chivalrous.”

Knights of Hedingham takes place tomorrow from 10am to 5pm at Hedingham Castle.

Tickets costs £14 for adults, £12.50 for over 65s, £10 for under-18s and £42 for a family.

Children under five can get in for free and all tickets will receive a 10 per cent deduction if booked online before to the event.
