This week, we bring you a special report on the outbreak of a bacterial infection which has tragically claimed the lives of 12 people.

The Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group says there has been 32 separate cases of Group A Streptococcus, better known as Strep, in Braintree, Chelmsford and Maldon since February this year.

Bosses say the outbreak, which began in Braintree, has now lead to 12 deaths and an investigation has been launched to ensure controls are put in place to contain the infection.

The CCG says the infection is rare and has largely affected elderly people in the community who have chronic wounds.
