PUPILS took a step back in time to mark a school’s milestone 175th anniversary.

Halstead’s Richard de Clare School in Halstead has held a week of celebrations to mark its anniversary.

Former staff and pupils joined town mayor Andy Munday and deputy Mick Radley on a journey through time looking at historical events and music from 1844 to the present day.

The school’s music teacher Mr Ribbetts steered everyone on a voyage of songs children would have enjoyed over the years and visitors enjoyed tours of the school before joining pupils and staff for a street party lunch.

Children and staff enjoyed a “moment in history” dressing up day with costumes representing every era from 1844 to the present day and followed a Victorian curriculum to get having a taste of what learning used to be like.

Headteacher Sarah Donnelly said: “The children have been fascinated by looking at photographs of the site where dresses and activities may have changed but they can clearly recognise their school.

“We have been so fortunate to be custodians of the school at this time.

“It has been wonderful to share memories and develop the children’s love of history while creating memories for the future. We have reflected on the past, present and future and have been truly excited.”

Visitors also enjoyed a special cake made by Humes of Halstead.

Pupils and staff created an aerial photo forming 175 and worked with artist and ex-pupil Will Claridge to produce a painting to commemorate the anniversary.

A museum display has been established, presenting many of the school’s records and photographs, and the week will culminate with a time capsule being buried to leave a legacy for the next 175 years.
