Thurrock Council has welcomed progress to convert a historic cinema into a pub.

Plans to develop the site of the old State Cinema in George Street, Grays are taking a step forward this month, with remedial works on the building due to begin later in April.

Thurrock Council welcomes this progress towards the development of a modern bar by Wetherspoons in the heart of Grays which will create an estimated 60 new jobs.

The development will form a key element to the improvement and regeneration of Grays Town Centre.

Love Grays, a community organisation improving the town said: "Have you seen the hoarding that was put up this week at the State Cinema in Grays?

"Looks like Wetherspoons may be getting their hard hats on soon.

"Watch this space.

"We can't wait to sink our teeth into this good ol' mixed grill."

Weatherspoons has been planning a new pub at the town centre for years.

The pub chain has been contacted for comment.
