A CRASH has closed a road in Basildon.

High Road between the A127 and School Avenue is closed to all traffic with only limited access to pedestrians after a "serious" crash.

Halstead Gazette:

Essex Police Force Control Room tweeted that the road is impassable and people should avoid the area.

They said: "High Road (from School Ave and the A127) Basildon is currently closed to vehicles and has limited access to foot traffic following a serious RTC. Please avoid this area if possible.

"As soon as we have any update on the road being opened we will let you know. Thank you."

A police cordon has been set up with motorists being turned around.

Pictures from the scene show a car has crashed into the railings near a set of traffic lights.

Darren Pagram, who lives on High Road, said: "I was walking towards where it happened and saw the police cars flying by me.

"There was a lot of noise, by the time I got here they had already closed it off.

"The front of the car was completely mangled in the railings. Can't imagine how it's happened."

Witnesses also reported an air ambulance landed near the scene.

Essex Police have been contacted for comment.
