A wheelchair user says driving is now a “real possibility” again thanks to the kind efforts of a charity.

Braintree resident Gary Gray, 53, is set to get back on the road after he was given support and an in-depth assessment by East Anglian DriveAbility.

Mr Gray has been disabled for eight years after he was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2011, a condition which develops when nerves in the body’s extremities are damaged.

The life-changing illness meant Mr Gray was unable to drive his car and instead was offered the chance to use a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

A small crash which caused damage to the vehicle put Mr Gray’s dream of driving again in jeopardy but after a thorough assessment with EAD, he is set to buy a new car which will enable him to get back on the road.

He said: “I would really like a drive-from-wheelchair vehicle as this would be easiest for me.

“EAD has been extremely helpful in showing me all the different aids and adaptations. I now know that a steering wheel knob and wheelchair ramp will be essential which I hadn’t considered before.

“I feel so informed which will definitely help me with purchasing and driving requirements.

“Driving is now a possibility for me for the first time in over seven years.”

EAD, which is based in Wakes Colne, offers professional support and driving assessments to people who are physically impaired or disabled. Self referrals can be made to the charity. Call 01787 222873.
