John May (Letters, January 3) seems to think his lengthy cacophony of insults and unsubstantiated assertions about the supposed benefits of the UK leaving the EU amounts to a coherent argument. It does not.

It is widely understood that any leave deal, including the one on World Trade Organisation terms which Mr May espouses, will leave this country worse off economically.

Mr May appears prepared to accept this cost; I am not.

Since 2010 we have been subject to Tory austerity, which has left the rich richer and everybody else a lot less well off.

The Tory Government has proved itself incapable of negotiating sensibly with the EU and has meanwhile neglected key aspects of our national life, such as housing, health, transport and defence.

It is time for a change. We need a Government that revokes Article 50 and that promotes prosperity, fairness, generosity, tolerance and a concern for the environment.

Only a Labour Government can do this, and we need such a Government now.
