The victim of a drink-drive related crash has launched his own campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Jay Connor, 29, has made it his mission to discourage people from drink driving having been "inches away from death" himself because of the actions of a drink-driver.

Mr Connor, who lives in Braintree, was left with life-altering injuries after the car he was a passenger in was hit by a drink driver doing 60mph on a roundabout.

To raise awareness about the impact the crash has had on his life, he has now put together a short video to raise awareness about drink driving.

Mr Connor said: "I think it’s important to get that message out there, because nothing ever changes. It just keeps getting worse.

"I want to target all drivers, but especially young drivers aged 17 and 18, because a lot of people that age will go for drinks and then drive their friends home.

"It won’t stop everyone, because not everyone cares, but if it stops one person from driving drunk, then that will be a good thing."

Mr Connor has yet to return to the scene of the crash he was involved in 20 years ago. Despite the traumatic experience for the then nine-year-old, he went on to learn to drive himself and is now hoping to prevent anyone else being the victim of drunk driving.

He says the effects of the crash remain an ongoing problem even today as there is very little can be done to repair some of the damage caused to his body.

He added: "The collision left me with neck and knee pain, as well as PTSD. My physios can’t do anything more for me. I’ve had all the pain relief possible; acupunctures, epidurals, and it’s at the point where I just have to get on with it.

"The repercussions don’t just affect you a week later, for me it’s still affecting me 20 years on."

Mr Connor's bid to raise awareness has been supported by the Road Safety Trust, which aims to make Britain's roads safer through educating drivers.
