A HOST of remembrance services and events will be held this weekend as the district marks 100 years since the end of the First World War.

The public gardens in Halstead is once again hosting the town’s annual service on Sunday. Wreaths will be laid at the memorial based in the gardens before a procession is held up High Street. A special remembrance service will then he held at St Andrew’s Church in Parsonage Street.

Those attending are asked to be at the public gardens by 2pm for a 2.15pm start. The service at the church gets underway from 3pm.

Town mayor Andrew Munday will be one of a number of specials guests attending both events.

Elsewhere in the district, a number of village churches will be staging their own remembrance events.

St Nicolas’ Church in Castle Hedingham, St Peters’ Church in Sible Hedingham and St Andrews’ Church in Great Yeldham will all be hosting services from 10.50am.

A separate tree planting ceremony will also be taking place along Sheepcott Road in Castle Hedingham. A total of 41 trees have been planted to remember villagers who died while serving in the first and second world wars.

A commemorative plaque will be unveiled during the ceremony, which gets underway at 10am on Sunday.

St Margaret's Church in Tilbury Juxta Clare will also be at 10.30am before the congregation will move down to the village war memorial at 11am where a metal cross will be unveiled.

The metal cross replaces an old crucifix which was damaged when vandals targeted the war memorial back in April 2017.

The old crucifix that stood on the plinth has since been repaired, but is now deemed too fragile to be reinstated on the memorial.
