Fifty new homes could be built on land close to a controversial development in Halstead

Famco Estates is proposing to build a mix of market and social houses on land off Oak Road.

The proposed site sits to the east of a 283-home development, which is being worked on by David Wilson Homes and Bloor Homes.

Famco Estates’ plans include building 28 market homes and 22 affordable houses, seven of which would be allocated as shared ownership.

The developer has promised to hold a public consultation if planning permission is granted, where residents will be able to have their say on the layout and design of the new homes.

As part of its section 106 contributions to the community, Famco Estates says it would give £50,000 to projects to create new allotments and outdoor sports space.

£250,000 would given to education in Halstead, £19,000 to health services and a further £23,000 to help fund the cost of the proposed community centre in Butler Road.

The planning statement submitted to Braintree Council alongside the proposals states: “The application site is located in a sustainable position, being immediately adjacent to the urban area of Halstead, one of the district’s main towns.

“Halstead’s services and facilities are all accessible by foot, bike and public transport.

“The development would also generate a number of construction jobs during the build phase and future residents would support local services and facilities. The site would not have a detrimental impact in respect to flood risk and drainage, transport and access, heritage, ecology, landscape, noise utilities, contamination or air quality.”

Famco Estates has also promised any dwellings build would not be placed within a 25 metre radius to houses Conies Road, which would back onto the site.

The developer argues the new homes are needed to meet Braintree Council's need for housing, despite putting plans forward for a parcel of land which is outside the town boundary.
