News that a popular monthly street market could be on its way to Halstead must be good news for the town.

The market – featuring artisan-style food, drink and crafts – has already proved a hit after it was launched in Braintree.

Indeecd, it has been such a success that it is being trialled in Witham for the first time this weekend.

Now bosses at Braintree Council say they are looking to bring it here too.

Not only would the extra stalls add to the town’s existing and rather depleted market, they would also help to create the extra dimension our town centre is crying out for and make the High Street a more vibrant destination for visitors.

Halstead town centre needs that extra buzz and this initiative could help produce that.

The chamber of trade has warned that it will need the public’s backing to be successful.

But hopefully that support will be forthcoming.

This could be just the tonic our High Street so desperately needs.
