A dozen outbuildings caught alight during a fire in Earls Colne.
Fire crews from Coggeshall and Halstead were called to Station Road at around 3.04pm on Tuesday.
Upon arrival firefighters discovered 12 outbuildings, all used for farming purposes, were alight.
Residents reported seeing smoke from miles away across the nearby fields.
A spokesman for Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire was extinguished by 3.53pm.
"Crews used thermal imaging cameras to help identify remaining hotspots within the area to avoid any risk of reignition.
"One person was left in the care of the ambulance service after suffering from shock."
No livestock is believed to have been harmed in the fire.
