A Halstead community stalwart who dedicated 50 years of her life to the town has died aged 95.

Marjorie McAleese died at Colne View Care Home, in Colchester Road, after a rich and fulfilling life in the town.

Across her 50 years, Mrs McAleese was very active in the community and a member of the League of Friends of Halstead Hospital, Halstead Women’s Institute, Halstead History Society and Halstead Flower Club.

She also worked at clothing store Sized Up until she was 78 years old.

Daughter Jane Corani said: “My mother was just an incredible woman.

“She was inspirational, self sufficient, energetic and just an amazing person.

“She was only 59 when she was windowed but was determined to get on and live her life.

“She was caring, thoughtful and very well respected.”

Mrs McAleese grew up in London but in 1939 she was evacuated to north Wales and went on to work at the Ministry of Food in Colwyn Bay.

It was here she met decorated RAF officer Jim, and the couple were soon married.

After the war ended, the couple moved to south London where twins Martin and Kevin were soon followed by Jane.

In 1969 the couple moved to Halstead, as Mr McAleese worked for Sible Hedingham joiners Rippers.

When her husband died Mrs McAleese threw herself into the town’s community.

Mrs Corani said: “She started the St Andrew’s Church Christingle service many years ago and she was very active with the church.

“She was an incredible gardener and a talented needlewoman as well.”

Mrs McAleese had six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A service of thanksgiving will take place at St Andrew’s Church on Thursday from 2pm.
