Primary school pupils unearthed their inner Picasso as they staged an art exhibition for the community.

Parents were invited to St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School, in Halstead, to take a look at a host of work produced by pupils.

The children displayed a wide range of art media, including origami-based work, watercolour studies, screen printing, collages, observational drawing and fashion design.

The exhibition formed part of the annual Take One Picture competition which takes place across the country and aims to inspire children to create art work based on a well-known painting.

St Andrew’s takes part in the project every two years and the school says it is often well-received.

Pupils based their work for the exhibition on the National Gallery’s stimulus for this year, ‘An experiment on a bird in the air pump,’ by Joseph Wright.

To keep visitors entertained, the children also danced and performed live music.

They also took on the role of tour guides and art curators to add to the authentic experience of an art exhibition.

Headteacher Bridgette Gough said: “The children have so relished the immersion into all aspects of creativity and the motivation of an audience for this has given them a real purpose.

“It has been rewarding seeing the arts being celebrated and the whole day embraces our school’s belief in providing a broad and balanced, creative curriculum.”
