PRIMARY school kids were given some one-to-one mentoring to help them prepare for secondary school.

Lesley Williams has run drug awareness courses in conjunction with Hedingham School since 1994.

The courses became so successful that Lesley was asked to take Hedingham School pupils to primary schools and brief them on the step up to big school.

She said: “For the younger kids it is just about social skills, things like saying no to strangers and road safety.

“The older kids are one to one talking to the children about what senior school is like.

“What you can do if you are not happy and they are speaking from their own experiences.”

Youngsters do not have to be going to Hedingham School to be involved.

Lesley said: “The two biggest fears are about getting lost and making friends. The older kids can provide information on things like that. These are the little details the school might forget to tell them.

“It encourages young people to talk because we have got this attitude of you must not tell people what is wrong, but that is not right.”

This year was a special edition of the course as it marked the final time Hedingham School teacher Dave Margery would be involved before his retirement.

Lesley and Dave visited St John The Baptist Primary School, Pebmarsh, on Monday for the last session together.
