A POPULAR real ale festival is set to make a triumphant return for its 13th anniversary.

Jointly organised by the Braintree Lions Club and North West Esse Camra, Braintree Real Ale Festival has become one of the highlights in the town’s calendar.

Hundreds of beer lovers are expected to flock to the historic Bocking Arts Theatre, in Bocking End, over the course of the three day event.

Braintree Lions Club members John Hedges and Simon Smith started the festival in 2004 with the aim of promoting breweries across Essex.

The decision was also made that the profits would go towards charities in the area.

Bocking Arts Theatre has been home to the festival, that has grown in size and variety with every edition, since 2006.

Whilst not the biggest beer festival in Essex, the event has become known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

In total, the event has raised more than £40,000 for charities.

This year’s theme is A Trip along the Thames and the selection of drinks on offer will include beers coming from the river source to the mouth of the river’s estuary.

All of the profits made from the festival will be split between Prostate CancerUK , DeafBlind UK and other local charities decided by Lions Club members.

For this year only the festival will also be known as the Men United Arms in relation to the latest campaign by Prostate Cancer UK.

Approximately 50 different beers will be available along with 10 ciders and perries.

Wine from across Essex is also available for those who want something a bit different.

Hot and cold food will be on offer at all sessions across the event.

The festival is open on June 15, 16 between noon and 11pm, and on Saturday, June 17, between 11am and 10pm.

Payment is accepted at the doors.
