A former professional football player is donating his Wembley medal to raise money for a team mate.

Shaun Bailey played for Colchester United and Halstead Town before moving to the USA twelve years ago and worked as a football coach.

However, in April, he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, which has caused him to have seizures.

He has minimal use of his right leg and hand.

His former team mates have organised a charity football match to raise money for his ongoing care.

As part of the match, Roy McDonough, who played for Colchester United in the 1980s and 90s and also managed the team between 1991 and 1994, is also donating his Wembley medal to be auctioned off.

He used to play with Shaun for Colchester and won the pure gold FA Challenge Medal in May 1992.

Mr McDonough, who now lives in Spain but is flying back for the match, said: “I remember he was a lovely lad and always good to be around.

“The medal has just been sitting in a box and I’ve been waiting to hear about a worthy cause to donate it for.

“When I heard about this, it was perfect.

“Someone offered me a grand for the medal a few years back, so it should reach a lot of money.”

He is also trying to get the 1992 team to the charity match to play and is considering signing copies of his book at the event with proceeds going to the charity.

David Streets, one of the organisers of the charity football match, used to play with Shaun for Halstead Town.

Mr Streets, of Witham, said: “He was a good team player and person.

“There were lots of football clubs which wanted to do something, including Colchester and Wivenhoe.

“We just arranged to do a charity football match.

“Everyone has come together to support him.”

The football match will take place on November 1 between Halstead Town with old players as guests against Colchester United and old players.

Kick-off is at 1pm and everyone is welcome to watch the match, at Halstead Town Football Club’s grounds off Rosemary Lane, Halstead.

There will also be a raffle and auction to raise money for him.
