Halstead is set to get a new community centre in two years after planning permission was granted.
The application for a new building to house the town’s museum, library, offices and multi-use space was formally passed by Braintree Council last Thursday.
Chairman of the trustees, Jackie Pell, said: “Getting planning permission is a big step forwards.
“We are on the right track and can now go forwards.
“It is exciting being able to take it forward to the next step.”
There is still a long way to go with the trustees overseeing the building needing to raise money before the building work can take place.
Mrs Pell said she was unsure of how much money was still needed to be raised, but that they already had some money and this just needed to be “topped up”.
