Shoppers should be charged for parking on Sundays in return for one hour free on week days in a bid to boost trading, according to business leaders.

Halstead Chamber of Trade and Commerce believes Sunday charging at the town’s Butler Road car park will encourage more people to visit Monday to Friday.

Chairman Anne-Maree Robertson supports keeping the free parking after 3pm in all Halstead car parks, but said the scheme also means the town council, which runs the car parks, loses about £12,000 a year.

She said: "Introducing Sunday charges could be a possible alternative to help fund additional free parking time in the week and ultimately promote business in Halstead."
