Ukip attacked for racist activists

Halstead Gazette: Ukip has surged into the lead in the European election contest despite a bruising week of controversies, according to a poll. Ukip has surged into the lead in the European election contest despite a bruising week of controversies, according to a poll.

A Tory Cabinet minister has attacked Ukip for attracting racist activists as it defied a series of scandals to take the lead in the European elections battle.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt urged Nigel Farage to condemn the latest controversial comments from one of his candidates, who suggested comedian Lenny Henry should emigrate to a "black country".

Mr Hunt pointed out that the remarks joined a list of other questionable interventions, including Ukip poster-boy Andre Lampitt arguing on Twitter that Islam is "evil" and Ed Miliband is not British. The party has also come under heavy fire for a hard-hitting ad campaign warning of the dangers of immigration.

However, a YouGov poll for the Sunday Times indicates that M r Farage is not sustaining significant damage from the furores, or persistent questions about his MEP expenses.

The firm gave Ukip an outright advantage for the first time, with 31% support compared to 28% for Labour, and the Tories languishing in third on 19%.

The results are in line with a ComRes poll for the Sunday Mirror and Independent on Sunday last month, which put Ukip on 30%, Labour on 28%, and David Cameron's party on 21%.

Responding to a speech by Henry in which he complained that ethnic minorities were under-represented on British television, Ukip council candidate William Henwood tweeted: " He should emigrate to a black country. He does not have to live with whites."

Defending the words, he told the BBC: "I think if black people come to this country and don't like mixing with white people why are they here? If he (Henry) wants a lot of blacks around go and live in a black country."

But Mr Hunt told Pienaar's Politics on BBC Radio 5 Live the comments were racist and "disgusting".

"I do think those comments about Lenny Henry were absolutely disgusting and I do think it's for Nigel Farage to make absolutely clear that it's not Ukip's official view, but also to explain why so many people with those kinds of view seem to be attracted to becoming candidates for Ukip," the Tory MP said.

"I think it's totally unacceptable and (Lenny Henry) is as British as you and I are."

Mr Hunt said there was a "broader risk for Ukip here because they position themselves as the patriotic party, they plaster the Union Jack all over their leaflets but actually there's something very un-British about this kind of language, very unpleasant".

"We are not a divisive country. We want to be a country - all parts of the political spectrum - where we avoid that kind of rhetoric and I think that's where there are some real dangers for Ukip," he said.

Ukip deputy chairman Neil Hamilton, a former Tory MP, said the comments on Lenny Henry were a "complete distraction" from the European election campaign, adding Mr Henwood's case would be investigated.

"This is a council candidate whom you would have never have heard but for all the social media archaeologists that are employed by Labour, the Liberal party and the Tories to try and track down any unknown Ukip member or activist who may have said something unpleasant on social media," he said.

"Every party has got them. We have strict rules on racism. We don't allow it. We're the only party that doesn't allow ex-BNP or National Front members to be candidates and we have strict rules on social media.

"I know because I helped to devise them. This man's case will be investigated."

Conservative backbencher David Ruffley insisted the Tories could learn from the polls that they need to promote their general election pledge to hold an in/out referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union.

The MP for Bury St Edmunds told the BBC: "I've knocked on a few doors and not many people know that the Tories, we, are the only party promising an in/out referendum.

"So what we need to do in the next 12 months is to demonstrate very clearly that David Cameron has made this pledge of in/out.

"The fact is not enough people understand it. We in Westminster think it's an absolutely bog standard bit of the political landscape.

"The punters don't realise it."

Labour frontbencher Mary Creagh told Sky News' Murnaghan programme people would go off Ukip when they examined their policies.

"We have an anti-party party with Ukip, their MEPs, there is a variety of them that have had to step down for a variety of reasons and they haven't had a very good week... they have had a variety of scandals," she said.

"I think when people hear that Ukip would like people to pay to see their GPs they might go a little bit colder on them and I think most people in this country don't mind where their neighbours come from as long as they come here to work and play by the rules."

Former Tory donor Paul Sykes, said to be worth £650 million, has pledged to plough more money into Ukip after funding the high-profile recent poster campaign.

He told the Sunday Times there would be "at least another two waves" of adverts before the European elections.

"I'm not giving up," he said. "That will warn the Conservatives what is going to happen. We will get more democracy in Britain if it skints me."

Separate ComRes research for the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) has highlighted disaffection among voters with European institutions.

Some 59% believe the European Parliament does not represent the views of voters, with the number rising to 68% among those aged over 55.

More than half of 18 to 24-year-olds are not planning to cast a ballot next month.

ERS chief executive Katie Ghose said: "This year's European elections are receiving an unusual amount of attention. With Ukip's rising popularity, the TV debates between Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage, and the Conservatives' promise of an in/out referendum, European politics has seldom been so prominent.

"And yet these results show that people still feel alarmingly distant from European affairs. We already know that nearly three-quarters of Britons feel their voice doesn't count in the EU and it looks like the problem is getting worse, not better. It's time to tackle the growing disconnect between the British people and European politics."

My great uncle was Irish & another was Scottish.
I'm also 1/16th German Jew.
Also eleven sixteenths of my genetic make up comes from Bongo Bongo land when my ancestors left there 100,000 years ago.

Frankly I'm shocked that the only reason you xenophobes & racists accept me is because I was born in England.

I believe the EU should expand to include all nations & the population of the entire world should be allowed to come here to either operate car washes or serve coffee on min wage so that Starbucks can avoid even more corporation tax.

Think of it. No more wars because we will be ruled from one centralised point. You see you can only have wars if there’s two or more points trying to rule you.

If we concrete over our land to build homes for the entire world it will be a
tremendous boost to the building industry & concrete industry.

It will boost our economy & we'll all be richer. It will also protect our
jobs. Think of the boost in demand for car washes the coffee they serve thanks to population increase. Yes more & more wealth. More & more boost to our economy. We’ll all be richer. You and me.

We could boost our employment, create jobs by having factories making replicas of all the trees that we cut down to clear the land for building homes for all these new people that speak exiting different languages from us that enrich our culture & quality of life.

Then sell those fake trees to the ever increasing population of immigrants. Yes incredible isn’t it. You guessed it. Yet more wealth from making replicas of what we cut down.

CO2 emissions & transport costs from China would reduce because all the Chinese sweat shops will be here helping to make you & me richer.

But don’t be too downbeat. It needn’t stop there. There are 100 billion galaxies, with a 100 billion stars in each. There must be 100 billion planets. Perhaps a billion with intelligent life.

If we have a bold vision for the future we can build 3D cities 10,000 miles high to accommodate the beings from those planets.

The more aliens that come here the richer we become.
We will welcome all of them. Even the ones like Daleks that want to kill us. In the end our compassion will win them over. They will learn to love us whether they want to or not.

It’s a bold vision I know. But it’s the only way we can compete in a universe market place.

But trust me. Follow me. Vote for me & I will bring you wealth & a beautiful
harmonious world where we all love any living creature whatever it is &
whatever it thinks.

We benefit them & they benefit us. We will put their young into care in nurseries as soon as they exit their mothers wombs and they will learn how to love our playstations.

Yes you guessed. I am Nick Clegg.

I find it funny that everytime another UKIP candidate with outrageous racist views is exposed they just brush it away.

This party has one popularist policy, saying that immigration is just good for the rich as it provides cheap chauffeurs. Really? What % of people is this. It's the same as when the Daily Mail points out a family getting 75k in benefits. Yes it's wrong but it's also pretty rare. Most of the welfare budget goes on pensioners. Fair enough for a poor old person to get some money towards their heating but why should a rich pensioner get winter fuel allowance? Surely this is also wrong? A welfare state is difficult to manage but do you want to live in a country where if you can't pay then you get no hospital treatment? Where if you lose your job you get no help? Things may not be perfect in the UK but they're a **** site better than most parts of the world.

And as for their other policies.... well, flat rate of taxes don't work and would cripple the economy, more spending on defence? and bringing back smoking in pubs.... just when you don't have to wash all your clothes everytime you go for a pint....

But no, they just focus on one policy.

They may try to be all friendly, with a pint and a fag, but as the unveiling of their candidates views unravel it just shows they are the friendly BNP.

Not sure UKIP are the friendly BNP. That's a modernisation of the old chestnut the Labour Party is the acceptable face of communism, which sadly is defunct these days as they are the new Tories. This Henwood character is right to a degree and so is Lenny Henry. I am sure they could both go down the pub together and find a lot of common ground.

As for Jeremy Hunt, well, he is Jeremy Hunt after all...

I'm not a Tory by any means. I think what Thatcher did by privatising everything hasn't helped the UK at all. Our national networks for energy, rail, water and communications in the main made good money and were self supporting. Sure they had efficiency issues that needed to be addressed, but they employed people with safe jobs, kept the infrastructure in the UK's hands and made us self-sufficient. That is something Mr. UKIP would not be comfortable with but it would have made us safer if we decided to flee the EU.

However, when I look at the ballot paper on May 22nd, it does appear the only party capable of changing things is the UK Independence Party.

he reason that the main parties are not defending mass scale inward immigration is because by any sane criteria, it is indefensible. This tiny set of islands is becoming over-populated, the infrastructure over-loaded, our Common Law heritage overruled and our national system of democratic government deliberately destroyed to permit our total absorption within the EU empire. It is appallingly heartless to allow unlimited numbers of workers from poor, low wage countries to pour in undercutting our own people. No government that cares about the welfare of its people would do this.
All three establishment parties are secretly determined to reduce us to a mere collection of regions. For the first time, with Ukip, there is a concerted push to take back our country from the self styled metropolitan elites. Therefore they are now resorting to any and all means to prevent the will of the people.

Couldn't agree more, UKIP are only polling well because they are receiving a huge amount of free publicity which other comparable parties like the monster raving loonies never receive! The EU aside, all their other policies are made up on the hoof and scribbled down on the back of one of Farage's fag packets. You don't have to be an evil racist to vote UKIP, all you need to be is just extremely gullable.

They may try to be all friendly, with a pint and a fag, but as the unveiling of their candidates views unravel it just shows they are the friendly BNP.[/p][/quote]Couldn't agree more, UKIP are only polling well because they are receiving a huge amount of free publicity which other comparable parties like the monster raving loonies never receive! The EU aside, all their other policies are made up on the hoof and scribbled down on the back of one of Farage's fag packets. You don't have to be an evil racist to vote UKIP, all you need to be is just extremely gullable. pauls55

So your a Progressive Liberal Elitist, or British hater, you want our Country to be over run with the UAF supported immigrants lowering our quality of life to their sh-tholes where they come from, here for our Country and our Money, what have your lot done for this Country, absolutely nothing, brought this Country to near Bankruptcy, Millions of unwanted job stealer's who work for half the average wage, the British native's with mortgages a couple of kids financially going back ward's and you want more, Priceless and Clueless just like your Government.

I see that the BNP (British National Party) are standing candidates in South Ruislip and Yiewsley. This is good because I feel that UKIP does not represent working class people.. Nigel Farage is a public school-educated former merchant banker and a multii-millionaire whose policies will help him and his kind (mega rich business people). I will be voting BNP in the Euro elections and in the council elections.

The biggest con man & talker of bolox on the planet!
Yes! I like your style! It was over one hundred years ago that the Liberals were letting into Britain 'Anarchists ' from all over Europe. No questions asked; they let in every revolutionary and anarchist that wanted to escape the authorities in their own country. These anarchists went on to kill British policemen but the Liberals were determined to have an open-door asylum policy. One hundred years later the Liberals are still supporting an open-door policy.

Unfortunately UKIP is very much part of the Establishment. UKIP is funded by mega-rich business people and headed by Nigel Farage, an ex-public school boy who used to be a merchant banker. He is also a multi-millionaire and he seems to be on BBC Question Time every week! The only political party that the Establishment fears is the BNP (British National Party),
