DESPITE trying conditions of a dipping temperature and a stiff wind, commendable scores were recorded in the annual Tutton Timber Shotgun competition at Braintree Golf Club.

With over 50 pairs in the field for the aggregate stableford event, Angus Neilson and Alistair Stalker secured victory on countback after amassing 76 points, the same as John Earl and Gary Carmoody.

In third spot, with 72 points, were Ray Davies and Roy Barnes.

The seniors’ pairs stableford saw John Still (19) and Mark Whitfield (13) finish on top with 44 points, finishing one better than David Bethell (14) and Brian Chase (13) while Steve Lythell (9) and Jim Rowe (18) were third with 42.

The nearest the pin competition was won by Ray Jenkyn.

The men’s midweek stableford was a close-run thing, with John Bradford securing 39 points off his plus-one handicap after finishing one ahead of Charlie Nibbs (4), with Patrick Crowley (20) third on 32.

The ladies’ Stisted Park fourball better ball brought a three-way tie on net 66.

After a countback, victory went to Carolyn Harris (20) and Judith Pryke (10).

Julie Race (8) and Eva Kajsa Bolland (19) filled the runners-up spot with Caroline Fields (16) and Margaret Margetts (22) in third.

Wendy Daniells (30) and Gillian Otter (29) were fourth with 67.

In the ladies’ stableford on Saturday, Carol Mehrer (22) finished top with 29 points, two clear of Sue Anderson (25).

Braintree’s return to the Essex Youth Shield competition resulted in a 4-1 victory over Gosfield.
