THE weekend’s non-league action provided plenty of goals.

However, it wasn’t all good news for our teams.

BRANTHAM ATHLETIC were involved in the strangest of FA Cup preliminary round ties, at home to Cheshunt.

They went into half-time with the score nicely poised at 1-1 before capitulating and ending up 5-1 down — only to then mount a late comeback and finish the game at a quite incredible score of 6-3.

WIVENHOE TOWN travelled to Fakenham Town in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division, looking to get on the victory trail after a difficult August.

They had lost three games in a row, conceding ten and scoring just two along the way.

However, they certainly hit back in the way they had hoped, winning 2-1 with Matt Eve and Lewis Blanchett scoring.

They were the club's first points of the season.

Wivenhoe dominated for large spells and were 2-0 up until the latter stages, in what was an encouraging result for the Dragons.

STANWAY ROVERS also improved upon their displays of recent weeks as they drew 2-2 at Wroxham.

Rovers opened the scoring 12 minutes into the game but were pegged back to 1-1 just after the half-hour mark — the two sides went in sharing the spoils at the half-time break.

Stanway took the lead for the second time in the 75th minute when 16-year-old debutant Owen Akpiama slotted home from close range, but Colchester United favourites Kem Izzet and Karl Duguid had to settle for just the one point as their side conceded an equaliser with ten minutes to play.

COGGESHALL TOWN were emphatic winners at home to Ipswich Wanderers, coming away with a 6-0 win and three well-deserved points.

FC CLACTON weren’t so clinical, though, and couldn’t find a breakthrough against Thetford Town, losing 2-0 in front of their home crowd.

In the first division, HALSTEAD TOWN came away with a satisfying 2-0 win against Whitton United, but LITTLE OAKLEY certainly snatch the majority of the praise this week as they put Team Bury to the sword, running out 10-1 winners in front of a 100-strong crowd.

Elsewhere in the division, HOLLAND FC were on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat at the hands of King's Lynn Town.

BRAINTREE TOWN RESERVES didn’t have a weekend match this time around, with their next fixture coming against Halstead on August 25.
