THE Essex Golf and Country Club's seniors have welcomed in their new captain Bob Rayner and said goodbye to the old captain David Lord in the traditional Putt-Out and Drive-In ceremony.

Peter Davies expressed his confidence in the new management team by guessing that the cumulative distance driven on the first hole would be 572 yards. He was one yard out as they achieved 571 yards.

Last year's captain, Lord, drove 181 yards, Rayner drove 193 yards and this year's vice-captain, Ernst Midl, had a 197 yard drive.

A turnout of 48 seniors then competed in a team Essex Scramble Competition where the best shot is used on par threes, the best two shots on par fours and best three on par fives.

Nearest the pin in two on the par four 15th hole was Keith Harris, who was also part of the winning team with a score of 156 points along with Colin Davis and Kevin Cassidy.

Man-of-the-match was Dick Steels with an individual score of 62 points.
