STAN Francis and Scott Howarth proved a winning combination in Gosfield Lake Golf Club’s Autumnal Auction competition.

Pairings are drawn at random for this late season event and it can throw together players who may have never played with their partners before.

The draw and the auction of the teams is carried out a few weeks before the competition and the teams are then sold to the highest bidders.

The cool Autumn weather following overnight rain meant players had to adapt to new playing conditions after more than a month of hot and dry weather.

For Francis and Howarth, though, this presented little difficulty with both players scoring above their handicap for a winning total of 77 points.

In second place, only two points behind, was Jake Letham and Jonathan Harris and just one point ahead of John Marsh and George Castle in third place.

The happy owners who bid for the three successful teams were Ralph Rowe, Ray Brown and Russell Lapper.
