A SUPERB round of 77 earned Steve O’Brien victory in the Presidents Cup at Braintree Golf Club.

Playing off 12, O'Brien’s nett 65 gave him a two-shot victory over nine-handicapper Tony Bannister while there was a countback on 68 involving four players, with third place going to Trevor Hardy (9) ahead of Luke Berry (14), Michael Latta (7) and Geoffrey Reeves (18).

A countback was also needed to decide the winner of the ladies’ Charity Cup and it went in favour of Angela Frankland (36) ahead of Susan Twyford (29), after both had 30 points.

The ladies’ Midweek Medal saw Janet White emerge victorious.

Playing off 18, she returned a nett 71, finishing one ahead of Linda Pestell (24) with Bridget Couch (22) taking third place on countback from Valda Curtis (27)as both finished on 73.

The men’s Friday nine-hole stableford saw victory go to David Holborn (13) with 20 points, one better than Richard Townrow (6) with David Atterbury (15) third with 35.

Anne Townrow (14) won the ladies’ nine-hole competition with 18 points, two better than runner-up Jenny Nicholls (14).

Low handicappers stole the show in the Bank Holiday Stableford, with victory going to Tom McGee with 38 points off a handicap of four.

Two-handicapper James Hedger finished second on countback ahead of Robert Dilley (12), both with 36.
