THE absence of several key players saw Braintree Golf Club bid farewell to this season’s Thornton Cup when they went down 6-9 to Maylands in the quarter-finals on neutral ground at Orsett.

Meanahile, the men’s nine-hole Friday Stableford qualifier was won by James Miller with 21 points off a handicap of 14.

He finished one ahead of Alasdair Groves (10), with Denis Howsam (8) third with 19.

The ladies’ nine-hole event was won by Christine White (14) with 14 points.

The ladies’ Betty Boucher Medal saw Diana Hughes return a nett 70 off 14 handicap to win by three strokes from Debra Blundell (28) with a nett 73 while Caroline Fields (19) was third with a nett 75.

John Samson and Ken Noakes produced two superb rounds to win the annual Paul Farnsworth Trophy open competition at Braintree.

The pair from Stapleford Abbots Golf Club returned 87 points - 43 in the morning and 44 in the afternoon - to win by one from the Boyce Hill combination of Adam Soilleux and Tom O’Brien, who shot 42 and 44.

In third place were Keith Lovett and Ian Towns, from Bentley, with 85 (41 and 44).
