IT proved to be a tight finish as 30 seniors battled for the annual Ron Thayre Challenge Shield American 4somes competition at the Essex Golf and COuntry Club.
The highlight of the day was 83-year-old Roy Whittaker recording a hole-in-one on the par three fifth hole, while nearest the pin honours on the seventh went to Jim Duignan and to John Manser on the 14th.
In second place, with 42 points, were Manser and Ernst Midl, but they were just edged out on countback by the winners, John Tuffen and Adrian Grubb.
