COURTAULD Halstead Bowls Club’s men’s B team have made a winning start to the season, having won both of the two games they have played so far.

The first match at Braintree D was won on all three rinks.

Terry Bocking, Malcolm Braithwaite and Tony Jones came back from behind to win 16 shots to 13, David Cole, Derek Brooks and Ray Joslin had a fairly even game and won 12-10 and Tony Wright, Bob Tuck and Roy Clemence held on to the early lead they established and won 25-21.

The match at home against Silver End B was not quite so successful although the men won overall 6-2.

Terry Bocking, Malcolm Braithwaite and Tony Jones led for most of the game and held off a Silver End comeback to win 20-14, while Bob Tuck, Ron Guthrie and Roy Clemence had an even game but picked up the bigger scores on the ends they won as they also triumphed 20-14..

Eric Marson, Derek Brooks and Ray Joslin had a tight game but were overtaken on the last three ends, though, as they lost 18-11.

However, Coutauld Halstead's A team continued their losing ways, going down 6-2 at Witham A.

It was a very close game, though, as the team lost 47-44 on shots.

Geoff Hughes, Adrian Smart and Brian Chadwick lost 19-11 and Pat Ashcroft, Gerry Cook and Clive Cracknell lost 17-11 but Wes Barton, Ray Dawson, John Ovel won 22-11.

The C team played at Castle Hedingham B and kept up their good form with a close-fought 6-2 win as all rinks were decided on the very last end.

Terry Reynold's and Ernie Simmond's rinks won by two shots but Bob Brace's rink lost by one so an overall win by three shots maintained their push for league honours.

The Sudbury Triples team played their first match at home to Colchester, winning by 46 shots to 36 and earning five points.

Sue Guthrie, Ron Guthrie and Roy Clemence won 17-16, Linda Topham, Lucy Barnes and Ray Joslin, made a late return to their games before losing in the final end 12-11, while Eve Lock, Gerry Cook and Clive Cracknell had to settle for an 18-18 draw.
