Halstead Town manager Mark Benterman admits he doesn’t expect to have to make much of a team talk when his side travel to Haverhill Borough tonight.

The Humbugs are riding the crest of a wave that has seen them take 33 points from their last possible 39 as they maintain the pressure on the Thurlow Nunn League division’s top three.

Halstead know they have ground to make up still if they want to get promoted, but Benterman admits the run that they have been on and the prize that is potentially on offer is making his job easy at the moment.

“People have been telling us that it’s going to be a tough ask (to get promoted), but the boys are producing in each game,” he said.

“No disrespect to other guys who have played for me in the past, but I think this group has to be the best by far.

“They are committed and make my job so easy.

“There’s no need for team talks at the moment.

“The situation that we’ve got ourselves into means there is spirit there in abundance and we just want this journey to go on until the end.

“All (third-placed) Ely have to do is drop five points and you can see that the pressure we are putting on the sides above is having an effect.

“There is no pressure on us and the boys are relishing the position they are in.

“They are expressing themselves and are taking care of business.

“We have been on a fantastic run, no-one has panicked and no toys have come out of the pram.

“We have just approached each game as it comes.

“That has allowed us to rest players, whereas other teams have not been able to do that.

“So we just need to do what (former Halstead chairman) Jim Holder always said to me and treat the next game as our most important one – because it is the next one – and that’s at Haverhill tonight.”
